The Asthma Center

Cortisol is a natural hormone produced by the adrenal glands. Early each morning, a burst of cortisol is usually released into your bloodstream.

Corticosteroids are one of several types of "steroids." The type of steroid used in the treatment of asthma is called a glucocorticosteroid (corticosteroid). Corticosteroids are different from anabolic steroids that are sometimes abused by athletes to promote the development of muscle mass.

Both oral corticosteroids and nasal corticosteroids are used to treat allergies and sinusitis.
