The Asthma Center

Other than asthma, what causes wheezing?

Wheezing may result from:

  • Some object pressing on the bronchial tube (a tumor, blood vessel)
  • An inhaled particle (a peanut, egg shell fragment, etc.)
  • Recurrent pneumonia due to a deficiency of antibodies
  • Cystic fibrosis
  • Cardiac disease
  • Emphysema
  • Chronic bronchitis
  • Pulmonary infections
  • Reactions to medications

Special diagnostic studies help to rule in or rule out these disease processes.
