Vasomotor rhinitis

Vasomotor rhinitis is a form of nonallergic rhinitis. It describes rhinitis symptoms associated with:

  • Changes in temperature
  • Changes in relative humidity
  • Alcohol
  • Odors
  • Bright lights
  • Hot, spicy foods

Symptoms are variable and consist mainly of a stuffy and runny nose. Sneezing and itching occur less commonly. As with all forms of nonallergic rhinitis, the cause for this condition is unknown. Treatment consists of mucolytic agents, nasal corticosteroids and anticholinergic agents.
