Antihistamines work by competing with histamine released by mast cells and basophils for histamine receptors on the mucosa of the eyes, nose, bronchial airways and skin. The antihistamine binds to the receptor and prevents histamine attachment, thereby blocking the effect of histamine in the tissues.
